Respect was something that had to be earned by Plains Indian braves, either from heroic deeds in battle or successful hunting. This proud Lakota brave wears a split-horned buffalo bonnet decorated with ermine skins, which denote stealthy and swift hunting. The bear claw choker along with his wolf fur–wrapped lance imparted fierceness and agility, someone to be respected.
