Sheriffs, deputies, and U.S. marshals were the law officers of the Old West. They often had to travel long distances to capture and arrest horse thieves, bank robbers, cattle rustlers, or murders. For many hours or days—or even weeks—they would ride over frigid, snowy mountains and hot dry deserts, and across rivers and lonesome prairies, hunting the lawbreaker. Often, they used up more than one horse as they rode long and hard. This bronze sculpture depicts a lawman, having caught up with horse thieves, who is in a hot-pursuit shootout with his Long Arm of the Law.
