The Maverick

oil on canvas
28 x 23 in.

For years, I’ve been interested in the photographs taken by Erwin Evans Smith, who during the late 1800s and through the turn of the 20th century, captured images of early working cowboys and ranch life across Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. This particular photo of a lone bronc rider caught my eye and became the inspiration for my painting The Maverick. The rawhide quirt and leather cuffs are remnants of that long-ago time, and the old, faded photo is a window that takes us back there.
