In the early 1970s I was hiking alone in the Escalante Wilderness for four days. After an exhausting first day, I made a late camp at a small watering hole deep in the canyon. I awoke in the middle of a brilliant night sky to find three little owls peering down at me while perched on a cottonwood branch maybe six or eight feet away. They were curious and unafraid, so we just watched each other until I (and maybe them) dozed off again . . . gone in the morning but for this lingering, magic memory.
