My interest in hibiscus began with observing a huge plant in Benson Park in Colorado. Every August I see this plant in full bloom, with blossoms over seven inches in diameter. After research, I learned there are several varieties, some indoor and some outdoor. The plant I used as a model was at a local garden shop. After starting my sculpture, I started seeing hibiscus everywhere. Although they all seemed to have different shaped leaves, what they all had in common was the large blossom. It took a whole lot of experimenting to come up with a new red patina.
