Ranching is about bloodlines. Lineage. Family history. Of both people and animals. “My granddad owned this horse’s great grandsire” or “That bull’s mama was one of dad’s favorites” are the kinds of comments you’re likely to hear on a ranch, statements that imply time, that imply lineage, history. This painting is about that history. It shows two generations of a hard-working ranch family sitting on their horses and simply watching cattle pass through a gate into a new pasture. It’s an opportunity for them to sit quietly and really look at the herd, at each animal, closely and carefully, and to pass on a whole family history from one generation to the next.
