Roman Nose, a Northern Cheyenne, was a member of the Crooked Lance Society, and although not a chief or medicine man, he was a well-respected leader. Known for his spirited horse, he always carried a peculiar lance with an elkhorn tip. The source of his “great medicine” was the single-horn buffalo headdress made for him by White Buffalo Bull, which had a long tail reaching toward the ground with 40 eagle feathers. Always displaying overwhelming confidence, he was easily recognized by other tribes. His actions gave strength and spirit to others, and he was called “the warrior of warriors.”
