Native to California’s deserts, California fan palms (Washingtonia filifera) are usually found around water sources like an oasis and have been used by Native peoples for centuries. Because the San Andreas Fault runs directly through this area along the northeastern edge of the Salton Sea and causes water to rise to the surface, many palm oases can be found throughout the low desert, including a number of relatively recent non-native varieties.
