John Fawcett grew up in Iowa, and after attending college on the East Coast he returned to Iowa to attend veterinary school. He was a practicing veterinarian for 20 years before selling his practice in 1996 to fully devote his time to painting. Working in watercolor and oil, his firsthand knowledge of animals is evident in his work. He currently resides in Clark, Colorado.
Fawcett has been invited to show his work at the Autry Museum’s Masters of the American West, where he won the Autry Museum Award for Watercolor in 2015, 2014, 2010, and 2006; the Cheyenne Frontier Days Western Art Show & Sale in Wyoming, where he won the Museum Purchase Award in 2006; and the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale, Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Cody, Wyoming, where he won the Artists’ Choice Award in 1996. The Steamboat Art Museum honored him with a retrospective exhibition in 2015.
He was selected in 1999, 1997, and 1996 for the Top 100 at Arts for the Parks, where he won the U.S. Art Award of Merit in 1997, and he was inducted as an Honorary Lifetime Artist Member of the Mountain Oyster Club in Tucson, Arizona, in 1997. He was inducted as a full lifetime member of the American Academy of Equine Art in 2002 and was named the 2009 Artist of the Year by Tucson’s Friends of Western Art.
Fawcett’s work has appeared in Art of the West, Cowboys & Indians, Equine Image, InformArt, Southwest Art, U.S. Art, Western Art Collector, and Western Horseman.
