John Budicin


 

Born in 1944 in Rovigno D’Istria, on the Adriatic Coast of what was formerly Italy and is now Croatia, John Budicin was raised in Rome and moved with his family to Southern California when he was 11. He has worked as an art director, advertising manager, and freelance illustrator. In the 1980s he embarked on a fine art career. At the same time, he was exposed to plein-air painting on a trip to Taos, New Mexico, where he took a workshop with Ray Vinella.

Budicin’s work has been featured in shows at the Albuquerque Museum, New Mexico; the Easton Museum, Maryland; the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, Oklahoma; the Maynard Dixon Country Invitational, Mt. Carmel, Utah; and in California at the Bakersfield Museum of Art, the California Art Club’s (CAC) Annual Gold Medal Exhibition, the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art, the Haggin Museum, the Laguna Beach Art Museum, and the Natural History Museum.

His paintings have achieved numerous top awards from the CAC Annual Gold Medal Exhibition, the Mission San Juan Capistrano Plein Air Painting Event, the Laguna Plein Air Invitational, the San Bernardino County Museum Inland Exhibition, the Bower Museum’s Plein Air Painting Invitational, and Oil Painters of America. In 2015 he won Best of Show at the San Dimas Festival of Arts’ 39th Annual Fine Art Show and the Landscape Award of Excellence at the Oil Painters of America’s 24th National Juried Exhibition. In 2019 he won the President’s Award at the Crystal Cove Conservancy Soirée. He won First Place at the Laguna Plein Art Painters Association’s 2021 Best of Plein Air exhibition.

His work has been featured in the magazines American Art Collector, American Artist, The Artist, Artist of the West, PleinAir, and Southwest Art, and in numerous other publications. He is a Signature Member of Plein Air Painters of America, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, the California Art Club, and Oil Painters of America.

Budicin lives in San Bernardino, California, and paints throughout the United States, making regular trips to Europe and his homeland.
