James Morgan

James Morgan’s art has been featured in many prestigious exhibitions, including the Masters of the American West at the Autry Museum, Los Angeles, where in 2014 his painting Exit Left—Tundra Swans won the James R. Parks Trustees’ Purchase Award; the Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition & Sale at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City; the Society of Animal Artists’ annual exhibitions in New York; and The Landscape and Closer Views, an exhibition at the C. M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana.

In 2015 Morgan was one of seven artists showcased in Woolaroc Museum and Wildlife Preserve’s retrospective exhibition, The Best of the Best: Contemporary Wildlife Art. In 2008 he was named Master Wildlife Artist at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum’s Birds in Art show, and he won the Ben Stahl Artists’ Choice Award at the Western Rendezvous of Art in Helena, Montana. He received the Colonel Richard H. “Red” Smith Artists’ Choice Award from the National Wildlife Art Museum, Jackson, Wyoming, in 1996 and 2007, and the Robert M. Lougheed Memorial Award from the National Academy of Western Art in 1994. The Steamboat Art Museum in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, honored Morgan with an almost-40-year retrospective exhibition, which included more than 75 paintings and drawings. The exhibition ran from December 7, 2018, to April 13, 2019. 

Morgan is a member of the National Academy of Western Art, the Northwest Rendezvous Group, and the Society of Animal Artists. His work has been featured in Art of the West, Southwest Art, Sporting Classics, Western Art Collector, and Wildlife Art magazines and in the books Modern Wildlife Painting by Nicholas Hammond and Leading the West: One Hundred Contemporary Painters and Sculptors by Donald J. Hagerty.
