Grant Redden

Born and raised in southwest Wyoming on a sheep and cattle ranch, Grant Redden always had a bug to paint. He naturally looked at the landscape, the animals, and the people as subjects for his creative impulse. His parents were from pioneering stock. His mother was born in a log cabin on the Henry’s Fork of the Green River in southwest Wyoming to a homesteading family. She attended a one-room schoolhouse until high school, and her family were fiercely independent and self-reliant people. His father’s family was among the first pioneers to settle in the deserts of Utah. With this background, Redden developed a strong attachment to the land and the life, along with an interest in history. He feels fortunate to have had the chance to build his home and raise his family on 120 acres of their summer pastureland and dedicate himself to painting what he knows.

Primarily self-taught, Redden has been mentored by many generous living artists, and has immersed himself in the study of deceased masters such as Sorolla, Sargent, and Von Zugel. He spends many hours in study and experimentation, focusing on principles of design, paint and color quality, texture, and craftsmanship. While subject matter is an important consideration in his artwork, developing and improving his grasp of the artistic principles that make a piece unforgettable is his main focus.

Redden was voted a member of the Northwest Rendezvous of Artists in 2010 and has received many awards of merit at the NWR annual show. In 2012 he was inducted into the Cowboy Artists of America (CAA). At the CAA’s Annual Sale & Exhibition, Redden’s work has received numerous awards, winning the Gold Medal for Oil Painting in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018. He won the Silver Medal for Watercolor in 2013. He received the Stetson Award, voted on by the member artists for best group of works in 2016 and 2018. In 2017 he was awarded the Anne Marion Best of Show. He and his work have been the subject of articles in such magazines as Art of the West, Southwest Art, and Western Art Collector.

Grant Redden is represented by Legacy Gallery, Scottsdale, Arizona; Maxwell Alexander Gallery, Los Angeles, California; Simpson Gallagher Gallery, Cody, Wyoming; and Wood River Fine Arts, Ketchum, Idaho.
