These mobula rays are found off the coast of Southern California, continuing all the way down to South America. They resemble a manta ray but are much smaller, with a wing span of up to four feet, and they sometimes travel in huge schools that number in the hundreds. I saw them off the coast of Baja Mexico while they were jumping out of the water in great numbers. There doesn't seem to be a definitive reason for this action, but there is some speculation that this could be for a mating display, predator avoidance, dislodging of external parasites . . . or just for fun.
