Tony Abeyta

 

Tony Abeyta graduated from IAIA in 1986 with an Associate of Fine Arts degree. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art, a Master of Fine Arts from New York University, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from IAIA in 2013. He also attended schools in Southern France and Florence, Italy.

Known for his contemporary mixed-media paintings, he is most inspired by the New Mexico landscape. Abeyta’s work is included in multiple collections— including the Autry Museum of the American West, the Boston Fine Arts Museum, the Crocker Museum, the Denver Art Museum, the Eiteljorg Museum, the Heard Museum, the New Mexico Fine Arts Museum, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian—as well as several other public and private collections. Some of his awards include the 2012 New Mexico Governor’s Excellence in the Arts Award, the 2012 Native Treasures Living Treasure from the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, and the 2018 Gene Autry Memorial Award at the Autry Museum’s Masters of the American West. He lives and works in both Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Berkeley, California.

Tony Abeyta is represented by Altamira Gallery, Scottsdale, Arizona, and Jackson, Wyoming; and the Owings Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
